VIEWER WARNING: The idents which appear here are NOT among my favourites and are shown for the sake of completeness only. SBS have some of the weirdest idents ever seen on a commercial network.  They are the TV equivalent to the musical stings used on National Public Radio in the US.  In my opinion it presents great programs and weird idents.  Not only are the idents weird, they are presented weirdly.  SBS once infected the Eurovision Song Contest with so much of its weirdness that it had to replay it a week later in an unedited form.  These days they only mildly infect it

This was the main SBS logo during 2000.  Given the multicultural aim of the station, I can only assume that their logo is some sort of interpretation of a world map in Mercator map projection. If this seems like an OK sort of logo, trust me, they get strange from here on in.

22Kb     Breaking down the map to just one "bit" gives us this shorter logo, with a slightly different tint. At a stretch this could represent the Australian hemisphere, or maybe its not supposed to represent anything.  Maybe its supposed to be weird.

41kb     SBS is unusual in that it is not allowed to show commercials during programs, only between programs.  And they usually show a few idents at the same time. Here a snake crawled itself to pieces wcich went on to form the 5-bit logo.  I should think this was nightmare stuff for young children. There was another version on this theme using a lovely scorpion!

34kb     As unnatural a flower as you'll find. Simple enough. A weird flower blossoms to reveal the SBS logo.

33kb     Now here is one I am a bit fond of. It had two musical versions and was the only straightforward logo the station had. "Had" because I haven't seen it for a long long time. It dates back to 1994, and perhaps earlier. I don't pay much attention to SBS logos so I can't be more definite on the time scale.
