New for September 2002.  OK I guess.  Some of these files are in stereo.  Thankfully, Nine have not yet gone down the road of the live-action ident, preferring to stick with computer animation for the moment  :)

The first and second files are are of the new ident (the smaller file is for you impatient people who can't wait for the larger download) and the third file is the new endcap to go with the new ident graphics.  The last file is the new promo campaign for July / August 2003.

New programmes on Channel 9 for 2003 include "Back-Yard Location Renovation Makeover Rescue Blitz" and "Better Homes and DIY Auction Block".

These clips were all captured during March and April, 2002.  Nine are still using the blue "Wolrd Map" ident shown below but are using these other idents more and more these days.  The first file is the ident to match the pictures shown here.  The second file is hard to describe, but I'd imagine it was designed for HDTV, it looks off-centre on a standard 4:3 TV.

With the introduction of digital television broadcasting, Nine introduced a new logo on January 1st, 2001.  This ident is a combination of the second BBC1 COW ident background, and a news opener.  The representation of the Nine logo is back to a flat, one dimensional ident with dots rather than spheres. The second file is a combination of the music from 8 Channel 9 idents (all on this page).

Introduced in February 1999 and lasting until the end of 2000,  this ident was produced by TZ designs in New York. Quoting TZs Vice President Iain Greenway from an article on the Designs In Motion website, "We move ... through the medium of the spheres ... towards a goal." ..My thanks to Chris Decker for the Design In Motion link.

This Channel Nine logo was used until early February 1999. It had a few variations made during its lifetime, including this insect version . The nine dots became spheres with the introduction of this ident which is available as RealVideo format from the links on the left.  The caption above the ident reads "channel nine" and below it reads "ninemsn.com.au".

This was the Channel Nine logo used in and around 1996 and 1997. Nines logos are varied but always strong and impressive. Here are the Sydney and WIN Television versions. Also shown here are the WIN and Melbourne "Still The One, this is Channel 9" idents which were rarely used at the end of commercial breaks. Thanks to Michael Costello for these WIN logos: 56kb 169kb 110kb

I guess there was a different version of this logo in every capital city. The Sydney Harbour Bridge features in this logo behind the dots in the third image. Before you watch the RealVideo, do you think you could guess the sequence from the three totally unconnected images?

Back to 1991 for this one, the last 9 ident to feature a map of Australia. The first image is an aerial view of Perth, then the view turns to look eastward (you can see Brisbane Melbourne and Sydney on the map) finally arriving in Sydney. Quite a nice animation and I heard more than one other person humming along to the melody.

147kb     At this point I run out of logos from my archive. All of the idents presented blow here, including this one, pre-date my arrival in the Great Southern Land. Here is an early variation of the 1991 logo, with similar music and no "dots". In my opinion the music used in this ident, and in its later variation, is the best Channel 9 ident music yet! Much thanks to the contributor of this logo who wishes to remain anonymous for the moment.

218kb     From Michael Costello, here is a 1980s Channel Nine logo. In my humble opinion, this logo set the direction of Channel Nine logos for years to come. It is featured in the combination logo below. As Evan Davis explains, Kerry Packer owned the Melbourne and Sydney stations of Channel 9 in the early 80s and that is why the ident zooms along the map from Melbourne to Sydney. I'm not sure at the stage of the ident used by the other 9 network stations during the same period.

1.3Mb     From Simon Joplin and Michael Costello, here is a 1990s Channel Nine promo. It's long and big at over 1Mb but it needs to be to do it justice. And how about that music? With music from ER Channel 9 made a promo with clips from the titles of all of their home produced shows. A pretty cool logo!

New for December 1999 is a RealVideo showing a compilation of Channel nine logos. My thanks to Michael Costello for compiling a wonderful tape of over 63 Australian TV logos and sending it to me to encode as RealVideo. He taped this logo before a Channel Nine program celebrating "40 Years Of Television". Thanks again Michael.
